Who? Kawasaki Heavy Industries, trading here as Kawasaki Motors United Kingdom.
Where? With Japanese headquarters in Chūō-ku, Kobe and Minato, Tokyo; it shares no relation to the city of Kawasaki, rather named after its founder.
What’s the story? Despite early releases under the Meguro name; being a motorcycle manufacturer acquired in the early 1960s, Kawasaki were actually focused on making aircraft. It was only with the success of these early models that they decided to rebrand and release bikes under their own name. A merger in 1963 led to the formation of Kawasaki Motor Sales, and despite some early criticism of their exports, technological improvements meant the Kawasaki brand could establish itself in the United States.
Key models? Released in 1984, the GPZ900R sports bike was what truly established Kawasaki as a force to be reckoned with. In naming it the Ninja, Kawasaki called upon their country’s old traditions while showcasing the new and efficient technology for which they’re best-known, combining the two to dazzling sales results.
Best exhibited in 1969’s Mach III H1 500, the Kawasaki Triple also brought new life to the street bike. Despite some very troubling handling problems, the early machines were extremely powerful for their time, and remain to this day as very valuable collectors’ items.
Anyone we know ride ‘em? Three-time and defending British Superbike Champion Shane Byrne now rides the green machine on courses all over the world, while the National Superstock 1000 Championship was won by Keith Farmer for Paul Bird Racing last season.
Outside the motorsports world, singer Nicki Minaj has often been snapped on the saddle of a ‘Kwacker’.
Coolest customs? Ten-time drag bike racing champ Rickey Gadson showcased his customised ZX-14 Ninja at a bike show in Seattle in 2009; a group of companies pulled together to create a monster, which caught many an eye during the exhibition and also won a fair few races during its time.
